Por La Gente Scrapbooks
Evidence of The Fires
The Por La Gente Scrapbooks are a set of four volumes of newspaper clippings from Hoboken’s arson era. The volumes cover the years 1981, 1982, 1983, and 1984 each year existing in their own three ring binder. The creator of these volumes is unknown and first surfaced posthumously in 2014 after the passing of long-time Puerto Rican tenants rights advocate Tom Oliveri whom they were gifted to anonymously. Titled after the prominent tenants rights activistgroup Por La Gente, a group led by a mix of clergy and concerned citizens who were devoted to decrying the arsons, gentrification, and a slew of housing injustices created by the city’s government. The group organized protests, vigils, and offered aid to families affected by the fires. The newspaper clippings of each volume are meticulously curated to offer a linear narrative of the events that transformed the city succumbing to corruption and greed. Each milestone of this history is detailed offering insight into specific arson fires and their aftermaths, partisan opinion pieces, protest coverage, and key bills passed, namely the decontrol ordinance which many believed enabled arsonists. The level of devotion held in these volumes is an endearing testament to the love a person can have not only for a city butfor its people. The newly formed archive assembled on this site would not be possible if not for the efforts of careembedded in these volumes.
